Vick goes buh-bye
Yesterday Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison on the federal dog fighting charges. It was far less than the possible 5 years he could've gotten, but close the upper end of the 18-24 months the prosecutors recommended. With time off for possible good behavior he might be out a month or two early, but likely he'll serve the vast majority of the time sentenced. It's too light in my opinion, but then, almost any penalty is too light for the vile, reprehensible act of animal cruelty & inhumanity. Of course he still faces state charges in VA, but he might get off lucky in that 1) it's not 100% certain he'll be charged (double jeopardy) and 2) if convicted he might get credit for the fed. sentence i.e. serving both sentences simultaneously. I hope he burns in true, complete, utterly miserable hell. Not enough words to describe the heinous act he & his cohorts committed. Unfortunately he'll still get outta the pen in 2K9, and some NFL team will probably sign him, so he'll still get a second chance at life & making more money in a year or two than I'll probably make in a lifetime. I'm all for second chances, but not for Vick. He's never shown true remorse, nor - even after being convicted or pleading out - has he straightened up. See his record on the post-plea lying to the court, his failed drug test, etc. He's a slug. Not only him but any other person that participates in dog fighting in any way, be it sponsor, bettor, spectator, trainer, they all deserve the worst of the worst.
Politics
On a brief political note I saw a blurb on CNN today that a fed. spook is being questioned on the wanton destruction of tapes of interrogations of an alleged Al Qaeda suspect (probably at GITMO). The tapes purportedly contained visual evidence of the practice of waterboarding - a form of torture banned by the Geneva Convention, and supposedly frowned upon by our gov't, and a practice they deny using. I think it's also outlawed somewhere in some document called The Constitution. Nice.
Life in general
My mood seems to be improving lately, which is a good thing. The proverbial clouds are parting & things look better, feel better. I'm thankful for what I have, and even though it sounds cliche, try to count my blessings & be actively thankful for what I'm fortunate to have going for me. Things are getting better.
Take care everyone, I'm outtie for now. One parting word, as we're bombarded (already) by debates & commercials for next year's presidential election: remember that this is - or was supposed to be - a government of the people, by the people, for the people. Be smart, be brave, and vote your conscience. Don't be a sheep or lemming. Do what's right, and be good to yourselves. Peace.
